Chanel Classic Flap
Chanel: A Timeless Fashion Brand
“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”
- Coco Chanel
Everyone and their mom can recognize the classic Chanel logo, right? It’s become a fashion symbol that’s embedded in our memories, evoking elegance and luxury, but also simplicity.
What’s the story behind the CC logo?
This logo design isn’t recent, and neither is Chanel! Let’s go back in history.
The Chanel logo was designed in 1925. It’s composed of two bold interlaced “C”s that mirror each other. The company's founder, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, was a creative woman who’s unique designs took fashion forward. During Gabrielle’s life, black was commonly reserved only for mourning and religious vestments. The color was considered inappropriate for social or fashion purposes. Representing your brand in black was a huge statement, and it caught people’s attention! That’s exactly what Gabrielle wanted.
The double CC is commonly known to stand for Coco Chanel! Why Coco? Well, Gabrielle was nicknamed “Coco” by her close friends. Where did this nickname come from? Well, no one really knows! But there are some conspiracy theories. One account claims that she was given the nickname “Coco” during a brief stint as a cabaret singer. Another story alleges that Chanel herself claimed that Coco was short for “cocotte”, the French word for “kept woman”!
Whatever the reason, Coco’s brand was an outstanding influence in luxury fashion around the world, and still is to this day. Most fashion houses have gone through numerous logo updates over the years to appeal to the changing times. But here’s the thing, Chanel never has. The same design from 1925 is the one you see today!
